On November 22, 1795, the representatives of the people named him brigadier general, an appointment which was confirmed on December 24, 1795. His conduct before Loano on November 23 and 24, 1795, where he captured several entrenched camps with great ardor and courage, is exemplary. At Dego, on April 14 and 15, 1796, he took 100 prisoners, took two pieces of cannon and seized the heights of San Giovanni. On May 7, 1796, he successfully attacked the entrenched camp of Ceva, and on May 10, at Lodi, he perhaps decided victory by throwing himself on an Austrian column which threatened the position. The government wrote him two letters of congratulations about his conduct in San Giovanni and Lodi. Responsible for guarding Salò, he defended this place with vigor and was dangerously wounded there.
